(4657) Border irrigation, or Border method
A type of controlled flood irrigation in which the land is divided into parallel border strips (`planches or calans` in French) demarcated by earth ridges. Water is successively delivered into each strip at its upper end. On the upstream of each strip a flat zone may be provided to spread the flow evenly across the width of the strip before the flow starts down the slope. (The `calans` of Crau Provence differ from border strips by the fact that the land surface is not levelled, as well as by the absence of ridges.)
